Spam posts are getting out of control
« on: September 23, 2019, 06:10:45 pm »
Is there any way to stop the escort ads and related spam posts? They have lately become epidemic.

It is getting a bit out of hand now,

Is there anyway of restricting new users from posting until given rights to by a mod or until they reach a certain number of posts?

Given how spammy these bots are. Can't there just be an open section of which any user that posts in that section gets banned? Or is this an actual human attack of spam?

We suspect a combination of both. For now, just report spam please.

First, thanks for working on it -- I know first hand how hard it is to protect a site like this.  The work is appreciated.

But - I have to say -- I am laughing myself silly trying to think who would come to this site -- see that -- and think "Oh wow -- Now I can see huge fake titties *AND* get my masters thesis in European history completed" LOL!!!!

just a tip from someone who mods on other forums:<Edit by Indy: removed because we don't want to give them any reason to change their spam settings> That is a very common thing for spam bot accounts. We ban those type of new members on a proforma basis. Looking at the members list now, I immediately see 2 new accounts that would fall under suspicion on page 1 and many more on the next pages; page 4 has 4 potential spam bots.

Example on page 4:

Registered 2019-09-27, the yahoo messenger is called "jewlry store etc.".

Typically these spam bot accounts may stay dormant a little while before becoming active.

Some of us come here for more than inflated huge boobs.  I for example love looking at the funky Russian letters trying to find them on my keyboard. Also, I have written several successful essays that have qualified me to run for national office.  :D

JK. Keep up the bot hunt and appreciate your work. I used to mod a board and those tips are great!

hi kwukduck

many thanks for reading my post. You deleted the one potential spam bot which I highlighted, yet left all the others? I would really recommend that you review ALL newly joined members of the last few weeks. You might also in parallel briefly want to close new registrations for 1-2 weeks. That will also help.

@wtforso:
We're quite aware of the blueprint of a spammer and how we can recognise them, we actually use that same thing that you mentioned. I did have to remove it from the post, in case they realise that we can recognise them that way, and that they would change their behaviour because of that.
Still, thanks for thinking along with us.

We have actually run a database script, according to your specifications, and some of our own, and removed 450 users that matched that description. Let's see if that worked.

Why not ask for a confirming email when you register?
