Site suddenly goes down for a bit? Only to be expected, it's unreasonable to expect 100% up-time after all.
The going-down takes longer than anticipated? Still fair, such things happen.
Site is down for two months? Can be excused, technology is difficult sometimes, and it can be equally difficult to find time to wrangle with it.
Site is down for two months with no communication to the users? That's straying a bit into the territory of "unfortunate".
The Twitter account - as far as I can tell, that's the only "backup" communications channel - had frequent updates right before the return, which I'm grateful for, but that was after an unreasonably long time of silence. The technical problems were initially only acknowledged after a week, with a wording like "the site is down, I don't know why, haven't heard anything from anyone" and then there was nothing but silence for a long, long time afterward. The only update was some guy in the comments who claimed to have heard good news upon direct contact with the admins, but without any verification, one might as well have believed the guys who said the admins had died (or just stopped maintaining the server) and the site expired in their absence. Silence for a month and a half will have people assuming the worst.
Anyway, it happened, but things were right in the end. I hope it would be possible to have a bit more active communication in the backup channels if something similar were to happen again. Or a bit of a heads-up beforehand, like: "we're trying to do something to the server, please be advised that things could break for a while, but we'll get it back working again eventually!" Just anything other than empty silence would be nice.
