Were those VHS tapes all shot on VHS-quality video or are there higher quality originals out there somewhere?

Ever heard the phrase "shot on shitty-eo?" It refers to the low picture quality of shooting straight to video tape. But it was incredibly cheap vs film and the processing costs it has. Or the film quality magnetic tape TV networks used at the time. So producers of things like local news, b and below movies, and porn had all switched to it by the early 90's. The super low cost made the dip in picture quality irrelevant.

Gonna be honest. I've seen them and they're not that great. They're very blurry due to the AI having to work with VHS footage at low resolutions. It's like watching something that was painted frame by frame.

Totally agree... I find this a very bad trend. We should focus on finding original VHS or DVD and making a proper rip and encoding... for posterity of course !
But blurring and removing every detail with upscaling is not what i call "enhancing".
